Reinventing the corner store.
Making eating well easier for all.
At The Community Grocer, we believe that everyone should have access to the ingredients to live stronger, healthier lives.
We’re building the country’s first retail food pharmacy—an innovative model where through radical community partnership, SNAP recipients can access hot, healthy meals in full compliance with federal policy—integrating Food is Medicine and workforce development into retail.
Our pilot in Southwest Philadelphia will serve as a national blueprint for urban and rural communities alike to ensure everyone has access to the ingredients they need to live stronger, healthier lives from soil to supper.
Our Approach
Revolutionary Retail
We’re reimagining the corner store as a place for fresh food and real community connection. Our market offers 100% SNAP eligible, locally sourced ingredients and meal kits that can be transformed into delicious meals. It’s all made possible through radical partnerships and co-creation. Read More…
Food is Medicine
We know that fresh and nutritious food fuels strong bodies, families, and neighborhoods. That’s why we’re working with health providers to ensure our neighbors can access the ingredients they need to live stronger, healthier lives. Read More…
Community Resilience
We’ve created this space to serve as a hub for learning, connection, and shared opportunity. Through workforce development, nutrition education, civic engagement, and community workshops, we’re growing local power and putting intention into every dollar from soil to supper. Read More…

Our Mission
At The Community Grocer, we believe that everyone should have access to the ingredients to live stronger, healthier lives. As we reinvent the corner store, our mission is to make eating well easier.
-
Our Vision
We envision a network of community markets and stakeholders that, together, achieve food sovereignty, sustainable economic development, and health justice for all.
-
Our Story
The Community Grocer was born from conversations with neighbors, research into systemic gaps, and a commitment to doing things differently. With deep roots in Southwest Philly and support from partners across healthcare, food systems, and policy, we’ve built a model that blends nutrition access, workforce development, and community voice into one space. Every piece of our work reflects the brilliance and resilience of the communities we serve.
-
Our Question Zero
The Community Grocer seeks to ensure persistent nutrition access in neighborhoods affected by food apartheid through a re-imagination of the corner store that pairs revolutionary retail, food is medicine, and community resilience.
